LFIC Core Cylinder Lock Overview

LFIC core cylinder lock is a type of adaptable locking mechanism that allows for quick and easy replacement of lock cylinders without disassembling the entire lock. Unlike their SFIC cores counterparts, LFIC cores are not standardized across manufacturers, offering unique designs and security features specific to each brand.

LFIC Core Types

LFIC core cylinder lock come in various types, each designed for specific manufacturers and applications. The main types include:

  • Schlage FSIC (Full Size Interchangeable Core): Compatible with Schlage’s 6-pin format and offered in both 6-pin and 7-pin lengths.
  • Sargent LFIC: Designed specifically for Sargent lock systems.
  • Corbin Russwin LFIC: Features a unique four-chambered pin section for core removal and reinstallation.
  • Medeco LFIC: Available in various sizes, formats, and security levels, compatible with rim and mortise cylinders.

These LFIC types are not interchangeable between brands, unlike Small Format Interchangeable Cores (SFIC). Each manufacturer’s LFIC offers unique features and security measures, allowing facilities to choose the system that best fits their specific needs and existing lock infrastructure. Our LFIC is compatible with Schlage FSIC 6-pin keying system.

FSIC vs LFIC Comparison

FSIC (Full Size Interchangeable Core) and LFIC (Large Format Interchangeable Core) are often used interchangeably, but there are subtle differences between them. Both are larger than SFIC (Small Format Interchangeable Core) and offer similar functionality, allowing for quick core replacement without disassembling the lock. Key points to note:

  • FSIC and LFIC cores have a larger “figure 8” shape compared to SFIC, with the bottom circle (plug) being larger than the top.
  • While FSIC typically refers to Schlage’s format, LFIC can include cores from other manufacturers like Sargent and Corbin Russwin.
  • FSIC/LFIC cores are generally not cross-compatible between different brands, unlike the more universal SFIC.
  • These cores offer more room for additional security features due to their larger size, potentially providing higher levels of protection

LFIC Brass Construction

LFIC core cylinder locks are renowned for their durability and quality, primarily due to their solid brass construction. This robust material choice provides several key benefits:

  • High-quality build ensures long cylinder life
  • Resistant to wear and corrosion
  • Available in various finishes, including satin nickel, bright chrome, and satin brass
  • Compatible with Schlage’s 6-pin keying system, with some models offering 7-pin length options
  • Can be keyed to work with non-interchangeable core cylinders, allowing for cost-effective system expansion

The brass construction of LFIC cores not only contributes to their longevity but also allows for seamless integration with existing Schlage key systems, making them a versatile choice for both new installations and upgrades to existing security infrastructure.

LFIC Core Installation Steps

The installation process for LFIC core cylinder locks is designed for efficiency and simplicity.

Installation Steps:

  • Ensure Compatibility: Verify that the lock hardware is compatible with LFIC cores.

  • Insert Control Key: Place the control key into the LFIC core.

  • Align Retaining Tab: Rotate the control key 15 degrees clockwise to align the retaining tab.

  • Install Core: Slide the core into the housing until it clicks into place.

  • Remove Control Key: Rotate the control key back to its original position and remove it.

  • Core Ready for Use: The core is now securely installed and ready for use with operating keys.

Removal Steps:

  • Reinsert Control Key: Insert the control key back into the core.

  • Align Retaining Tab Again: Turn the control key 15 degrees clockwise.

  • Extract Core: Pull to extract the core from the housing.

This quick-change capability makes LFIC systems ideal for environments requiring frequent rekeying, such as offices or educational institutions. Regular maintenance checks are recommended to ensure optimal performance and security of the LFIC system.

Keyway Design Variations

Large Format Interchangeable Core (LFIC) systems offer significant keyway variability, allowing for enhanced security and customization across different manufacturers. Unlike Small Format Interchangeable Cores (SFIC), LFIC keyways are not standardized, resulting in unique designs specific to each brand. This variability provides several advantages:

  • Increased security through proprietary keyway designs
  • Compatibility with manufacturer-specific key systems
  • Flexibility to convert locks using mortise housings made for Schlage FSIC, Sargent, or Corbin Russwin LFIC formats to Schlage keyways

The diversity in LFIC keyways allows organizations to tailor their security solutions to specific needs, balancing accessibility with protection against unauthorized key duplication and lock manipulation.

Core Locking Mechanism

LFIC operate using a unique mechanism that allows for quick core removal and replacement without disassembling the entire lock. The core consists of two main components: the plug, which contains the keyway and pin chambers, and the shell, which houses the plug and interacts with the lock body.Key features of the LFIC operating mechanism include:

  • A control lug that extends from the rear of the core, engaging with the lock housing when installed
  • A control key that, when inserted and rotated, retracts the control lug, allowing for core removal
  • Build-up pins in the first four positions that operate the control feature
  • A figure-8 shape with the bottom circle (plug) being larger than the top, distinguishing it from Small Format Interchangeable Cores (SFICs)
  • Compatibility with various lock types, including mortise, rim, and key-in-lever formats

This design enables facility managers to quickly change cores for security updates or maintenance, significantly reducing downtime and labor costs associated with traditional lock rekeying.
