SFIC Core Cylinder Lock Overview
SFIC core cylinder lock is a versatile locking mechanism widely used in commercial and institutional settings, allowing for quick and easy rekeying without the need for locksmith intervention. SFIC cores can be replaced in seconds using a specialized control key, making them an ideal choice for properties that require frequent rekeying, such as offices, universities, and dormitories.
SFIC Installation Process
The installation process for Small Format Interchangeable Core (SFIC) locks is designed to be quick and straightforward. To install an SFIC core, first ensure the lock is in either the fully locked or unlocked position. Insert the control key into the core and turn it clockwise, which retracts a small retainer piece that holds the core in place. The core can then be easily inserted into the lock housing. Once properly seated, remove the control key, which allows the retainer to engage and secure the core within the housing.
- Ensure compatibility between the core and lock housing
- Use the correct tailpiece that matches the pin stack configuration
- For cabinet locks, align the prongs inside the lock body at the appropriate angle before insertion
- In some cases, removal of existing cores may be necessary prior to installation
It’s important to note that while the process is generally similar across brands, slight variations may exist. Always consult our the specific instructions for the most accurate installation procedure.
Keyway Variability in SFIC
SFIC core cylinder locks offer a wide range of keyway options, providing flexibility and enhanced security for various applications. Secutor SFIC cores are compatible with several keyway families, including the classic A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, J, K, L, M, N, Q, as well as the WA, WB, WG, TB family. These keyways are fully interchangeable with those of the same letter designations from other manufacturers like Arrow, Best and KSP.
- Best “A” keyway is ordered as “AB” in Schlage systems
- Arrow and Schlage suffix keyway letters with “B” (e.g., AB, DB)
- Medeco B is compatible with A to Q, W, and T
- SFIC cores are not available in Schlage C keyway, which is limited to Full Size Interchangeable Cores (FSIC)
Comparing SFIC and LFIC
Small Format Interchangeable Cores (SFIC) and Large Format Interchangeable Cores (LFIC) are two main types of interchangeable lock cylinders, each with distinct characteristics. SFIC core cylinder locks are more universal and cross-compatible among different manufacturers, while LFIC core cylinder locks are typically brand-specific and not interchangeable between brands. The most noticeable physical difference is in their appearance: both have a figure-8 shape, but SFIC cores have concentric circles, whereas LFIC cores have a larger bottom circle.
- SFIC cores are smaller and more versatile, ideal for frequent rekeying situations
- LFIC cores often incorporate additional security features
- SFIC keys have a lower profile compared to most commercial keyways used in LFIC locks
- LFIC cores from manufacturers like Assa Abloy, Corbin-Russwin, and Schlage have unique removal mechanisms, further limiting interchangeability
SFIC Core Compatibility
While Small Format Interchangeable Cores (SFIC) are designed to be more universal than their Large Format counterparts, they are not entirely universal across all manufacturers and systems. However, SFIC core cylinder locks do offer a high degree of compatibility and standardization within the industry:
- SFIC cores from different manufacturers are often dimensionally similar and can be installed in other manufacturers’ SFIC-prepped locks.
- Our SFIC cores and related products are compatible with many brands, including Best, Falcon, Arrow, and others.
- The standardized size and shape of SFIC cores allow for widespread interchangeability.
It’s important to note that while the physical dimensions may be compatible, keyways and internal mechanisms can vary. We manufacture SFIC core cylinder locks that are compatible with popular keyways. However, for maximum security and control, it’s recommended to use cores and locks from the same manufacturer or to verify compatibility before installation.
Combined vs Uncombined Cores
SFIC core cylinder locks are available in both combined and uncombined configurations. Combined cores come pre-pinned and keyed, ready for immediate use, while uncombined cores are supplied without pins or springs, allowing for custom keying. Uncombined cores offer greater flexibility, as they can be pinned to match existing key systems or create new ones, making them ideal for locksmiths and facilities with in-house key control. Combined cores, on the other hand, are more convenient for immediate installation but limit customization options. When ordering uncombined cores, it’s important to note that they require professional keying before use, as they do not include pins, springs, or keys
Control vs Change Keys
In Small Format Interchangeable Core (SFIC) systems, control keys and change keys serve distinct purposes:
- Control keys are used exclusively to remove or install the lock core, allowing for quick rekeying without locksmith intervention. They operate the upper shear line of the core, retracting the control lug that holds the core in place.
- Change keys (also known as operating keys) are used for normal locking and unlocking of the core but cannot remove it. They operate the lower shear line, which controls the lock mechanism.
The primary difference lies in their functionality: control keys manage core removal and installation, while change keys handle day-to-day lock operation. Every SFIC system requires at least these two types of keys, even if not masterkeyed. This dual-key design enhances security by separating core management from regular lock usage
